Augusta County Has No Town Municipal Court
“Municipal warrant” is sometimes used informally for process connected to a town ordinance, traffic citation, or missed appearance. In Augusta County, Craigsville and Grottoes do not have their own municipal courts, separate warrant lists, or town court portals. A warrant or capias is issued and recorded through the Virginia court with authority over the matter.
Town police may enforce local law and help route a question, but the issuing court controls the case and any recall. Countywide searching can still miss details because no public Sheriff name roster exists and OCIS is a case index rather than a live warrant system.
Augusta Town Cases Follow State Court Routes
Virginia’s district courts hear the kinds of adult traffic and misdemeanor cases that a town citation may create. The citation identifies where the matter was filed. For Augusta GDC, the clerk’s office is at 100 Dick Huff Lane, Suite 1070, and can be reached at (540) 245-5300. A town address does not create a separate municipal clerk or warrant counter.
For felony proceedings or indictment capias matters, Circuit Court may hold the later file; family and juvenile matters go to JDR. Always follow the court named in the summons or order, especially if the case began in another county.

Town names do not change the issuing court shown on a case record.
Which Augusta Towns Have a Municipal Court
Neither of Augusta’s two incorporated towns maintains a separate local court. The table lists the practical route when an issue is associated with either town; use the summons to verify venue and court.
| City | Court | What It Handles |
|---|---|---|
| Grottoes | No town court; check the court printed on the citation | Town ordinance, traffic, or appearance issue routed through the appropriate Virginia court |
| Craigsville | No town court; check the court printed on the citation | Town ordinance, traffic, or appearance issue routed through the appropriate Virginia court |
Grottoes and Craigsville Court Boundaries
Grottoes sits across Augusta and Rockingham County. The town’s police department may clarify which agency took a report, but case venue follows the issuing court and locality shown on the paperwork. If the event occurred on the Rockingham side, an Augusta search may not find the docket.
Craigsville is in western Augusta County and has a town police department, but the town also does not operate an independent court. In either place, distinguish a town police contact from the court that can set a hearing, accept an appeal, or recall process.
For town-specific contact details see the Grottoes warrant search and Craigsville warrant search.
How to Check an Augusta Town Case
Begin with the citation or summons and identify the court, locality, and case number. Use OCIS for covered adult files, then contact the clerk for warrant status and instructions. No Grottoes or Craigsville municipal portal or publicly posted town warrant list was found.
- Search Virginia Online Case Information for the court and locality printed on the paperwork.
- Check the citation number, case number, name spelling, and county; the online case list does not show every live warrant status.
- Call the issuing court clerk. Augusta GDC’s published number is (540) 245-5300; town police can route local contacts but cannot recall a court order.
- If online and telephone results are unclear, ask the clerk what in-person review is permitted and whether counsel should arrange the next step.
Augusta Municipal Warrant Search Boundaries
OCIS covers many adult criminal and traffic matters, along with selected Circuit and JDR records. It is not a complete live-status lookup, and juvenile or family information has statutory limits. The Sheriff’s Office maintains service information separately from court dockets and does not publish a general name-search list.
If a town event crosses the Grottoes county line or a citation names another court, expand the search to the named jurisdiction. A blank result is not proof that no case or process exists.
Municipal Labels Can Hide the Court Route
A town ordinance citation may be described informally as a “municipal” matter even though the case is filed in Virginia’s district court system. Use the court printed on the notice, not the name of the town, to identify the clerk. If there is a missed appearance, ask whether the docket shows an FTA capias or a separate payment order.
For Augusta adult traffic and misdemeanor matters, the GDC clerk can explain the entry. Circuit and JDR handle separate case types, and their records do not form one town search.
Details to Confirm for an Augusta Town Warrant
Augusta publishes no standardized municipal-warrant record layout because the towns do not maintain separate courts. Treat any case screen as a starting point and ask the issuing clerk to verify the official order and current status.
| Case Number | Use the reference printed on the summons; no town-only format is published. |
|---|---|
| Charge or Ordinance | Read the exact allegation and whether it is traffic, local ordinance, or another matter. |
| Issuing Court | Identify the Virginia court and county printed on the record. |
| Fine or Bond | Ask the clerk for the current amount and conditions; do not rely on an old notice. |
| Process Status | Confirm whether a warrant, capias, or other order remains active. |
Augusta Town Police and Court Records
Town police records and court case records answer different questions. Craigsville’s Police Department can be reached at (540) 997-5814; Grottoes Police Department at (540) 249-5707. These local departments can help direct a town-related inquiry but are not municipal court clerks. For service details, the Augusta County Sheriff’s Office is at 127 Lee Highway in Verona, phone (540) 245-5333.
Ask the office for the right type of record: incident report, court case, warrant-service status, or town contact. FOIA requests to the Sheriff may be submitted through the County request portal and should describe specific records; investigations and protected information can be withheld.
Resolving Augusta Town-Related Process
Ask the issuing court what action is required; a town police department cannot set a hearing or recall a judicial warrant. Depending on the case, the court may require an appearance, motion, payment, or bond. A lawyer can assess the effect of appearing and whether the process concerns a missed date, a new charge, or another order.
- Call the clerk named on the notice and confirm the order, balance, next date, and required appearance.
- Ask whether the court accepts payment or requires a hearing or motion; do not assume a fine payment recalls separate process.
- Follow counsel’s advice about appearance, bond, or a request to recall or quash the order.
- After the court rules or accepts payment, obtain confirmation and separately ask the Sheriff or issuing agency when its service record updates.
Warning: A town contact or payment receipt does not prove the court recalled a warrant; confirm the order with the issuing clerk before relying on a change.
